Stop Nappy Leaks at Night: Improve Baby's Sleep with These Tips

Discover why nappies leak overnight and how to fix them with Baby BeeHinds’ expert-approved cloth nappy solutions for leak-free sleep and happy mornings.

Why Your Baby’s Nappy is Leaking at Night?

Night-time nappy leaks are one of the most frustrating sleep disruptors for both babies and parents. Whether you’re using disposable nappies or cloth nappies, leaks can happen for a range of reasons — but the good news is, they’re usually fixable.

Common Causes of Leaking Nappies
Poor fit: Gaps around the legs or waist let moisture escape.
Not absorbent enough: Some nappies simply can’t hold a full night’s worth of urine.
Compression leaks: When your baby lays or rolls on a full nappy, liquid can be squeezed out.
Wrong nappy style or size: Babies grow fast and may outgrow nappies before you expect.
Build-up in cloth nappies: Detergent or barrier cream residues can reduce absorbency or they reach capacity.

Whether you use disposables or reusables, getting the right combination of fit and absorbency is key.

Why Leaking Nappies Affect Baby’s Sleep

When your baby is waking up wet, uncomfortable, or cold, it disrupts their sleep cycles — and yours too. Moisture also increases the risk of nappy rash, which can make settling for sleep even harder.

Switching to a better overnight nappy system can drastically reduce wake-ups and help your baby sleep longer and more comfortably.

How to Prevent Nappy Leaks at Night

Here are the most effective ways to stop night-time nappy leaks for good:

1. Choose a High-Absorbency Night Nappy

Standard daytime nappies often don’t cut it overnight. When you think about how long a nappy is on the bottom overnight compared to day time – you need some serious absorption especially when baby starts sleeping through. We recommend switching to a dedicated night nappy system with multiple layers of absorbency.

Try This: Baby BeeHinds Night Nappy  + Wool Cover – our most absorbent cloth nappy, designed for 10–14 hours of protection. Pair with a lanolised wool cover for the ultimate heavy wetting combo that will give you up to 500ml of capacity.

2. Add a Booster for Extra Absorbency

If your baby is a heavy wetter, adding a cloth nappy booster can make all the difference. Boosters increase the amount of liquid your nappy can hold without adding too much bulk. We recommend adding this to the outside of your normal nappy (yes you can add these to the outside of a disposable nappy – just pop a waterproof cover over both to keep everything contained)

Recommended product:
Hemp or Bamboo Boosters – ultra-absorbent and naturally antibacterial, ideal for night use or the Leaking Nappies Kit is ready to go.

3. Use a Waterproof Cover to Contain Leaks

A waterproof nappy cover helps keep everything contained even if the nappy gets saturated. These are especially important for overnight use and can be used over the top of disposable nappies. Definitely add an extra layer of absorbency to catch any wetness that leaks out of your nappy. The leaking nappies kit is perfect for this.

Try:
Wool Nappy Cover – breathable yet waterproof, perfect for overnight and cooler weather – and you only wash it every few weeks OR the Leaking Nappies Kit is the easier option for over disposables.

4. Check the Fit (Especially Around Legs and Waist)

Leaks often happen due to gaps or poor positioning. Make sure the nappy is snug but not too tight. With cloth nappies, the right fold or insert placement can be crucial so try different folds and position the majority of the absorbency in the wet zones – front for boys, middle to front for girls.

Disposable vs Cloth Nappies at Night: Which is Better?

Disposable nappies can work for some babies, but many parents find that even the ultra-absorbent ones still leak after 8+ hours. Cloth nappies offer more customisation for fit, absorbency and leak protection — especially overnight as you can build up extra layers easily. Yes it takes a bit of tweaking and trialling to get the right combination BUT once you get it right, you’ll love the fact bub can sleep through all night long without waking to change the nappy.

With cloth nappies, you can tailor the setup with boosters, covers, and natural absorbent fabrics to suit your baby’s needs.

Real Parent Tip: Track Your Baby’s Overnight Wetting: To figure out if its a fit or function issue with your current night nappy, try weighing the nappy before and after sleep. Weigh it dry before it goes on the bum at night, then again in the morning. Also weigh it by adding liquid to a clean dry nappy to see what capacity to reaches. Typically if the wet weight gets to 75% of the total capacity of the nappy, then it should be enough capacity. If bub is out wetting the nappy at under 75% capacity, then typically its a fit issue (incorrect size, too loose or too tight)

If you’re tired of 2am outfit and bedding changes, it might be time to make the switch to Baby BeeHinds’ award-winning night nappy solutions.
