The Ultimate Guide to Long-Term Cloth Nappy Storage

Proper long-term storage of cloth nappies is essential to maintain their quality and extend their lifespan. Whether you're storing them between children or during a break, following best practices ensures they remain in excellent condition for future use.

Why Proper Cloth Nappy Storage Matters

Why Proper Cloth Nappy Storage Matters

Effective storage prevents issues such as:

Mould and Mildew Growth: Moisture can lead to fungal growth, damaging fabrics and causing odours.

Elastic Deterioration: Improper storage conditions can cause elastics to degrade, reducing the nappy’s effectiveness.

Fabric Degradation: Exposure to extreme temperatures or sunlight can weaken fabrics, leading to tears or reduced absorbency.

Step-by-Step Guide to Storing Cloth Nappies Long Term

1. Clean and Prep Cloth Nappies Before Storage

Ensuring nappies are thoroughly clean and dry is crucial before storage.

Thorough Cleaning: Wash nappies using a reliable  routine to remove residues and prevent stains. Highly recommend a long, hot wash at 60 degrees on CLEAN nappies to give them a deep clean. Using a product like BABY by B Clean Co and or a hit of Napisan into your main wash should do the trick.

Complete Drying: Ensure nappies are entirely dry before storage to prevent mould and mildew.

2. Choose the Right Storage Containers

Selecting appropriate storage solutions helps maintain nappy integrity.

Breathable Storage Solutions: Use cotton pillowcases, mesh laundry bags, or fabric bins to allow airflow. Plastic Storage Bins with Proper Ventilation: If using plastic bins, ensure they are loosely sealed to prevent trapped humidity. You can use vacuum sealed bags but with any storage make sure items are completely dry before use.

3. Store in a Climate-Controlled Environment

Maintaining stable environmental conditions is vital.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures: Store nappies in areas without significant temperature fluctuations, avoiding attics or outdoor sheds.

Control Humidity: Keep nappies in dry places away from moisture sources to prevent mould growth.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Storing Damp Nappies: Always ensure nappies are completely dry before storage to prevent mould growth. Using Airtight Plastic Bags: Lack of airflow can cause mildew and odour buildup. Ignoring Temperature Changes: Avoid storing nappies in areas with extreme temperature fluctuations.

Other Questions

Do you need to wash them when you need to start using them again?
If they were properly cleaned prior to storing, then no they should be good to use straight away.

Should I periodically wash them while they are stored away to maintain elastics? this used to be old advice, however if the nappies are correctly washed, dried and stored in conditions mentioned above, then no you do not need to wash them every 6 months.

Do keep in mind, that like any garments – the longer it is left in storage, the higher the chances of elastics/fabrics failing simply due to the nature of fabric (this isn’t a manufacturing fault – its simply what happens to long term elastic & fabric not being used)
