When the rash turns nasty?

There are a myriad of reasons why babies get that nasty red nappy rash – from teething, to change of your diet, to chemical based wet wipes, to reaction to fabrics or materials and we always advise to check with your health professional if you’re unsure about a rash as the first point of call.

A barrier cream that contains zinc is the best way to get nappy rash under control quickly. Zinc has anti-inflammatory properties and helps to regenerate the surface of the skin with new skin grow. There are many rash creams out there with zinc, but a lot are full of other chemicals. Our hands-down favourite zinc based cream is Calendula Nappy Rash Cream by the world wide experts Weleda. Loaded full of natural ingredients like calendula, sweet almond oil, beeswax, naturally occurring lanolin but with added zinc oxide, this one packs a powerful punch and will have that rash under control quickly.

Can I use zinc based creams on my cloth nappies?

Yes absolutely! If using a rash cream with a zinc based component,  it’s important to use a disposable or reusable nappy liner as the zinc can leave a thin layer on your nappies which can limit the absorption rates of your cloth nappies, so it’s always best to use nappy liners when using a zinc cream. Standard washing protocol with a good enzyme based detergent, 40-60 degrees will remove the zinc properly, but it can’t hurt to add an extra layer of protection.
